for your queries: post item with full description (very important) value of item + shipping country of origin
paano po computation ng rings? nakabili kasi ako sa ebay 270$ ring. declared siya as 270 $ medyo kinakabahan kasi ako baka mamaya naman sobra mahal i charge sa akin tax
salamat pala katana_hunter for pointing me to this thread.
wah!! =( ang laki 50% na ng item ko yun. badtrip nga di ko agad naisip yung tax eh. kasi naisip ko door to door. hay =( too late na yung na realize ko. ang laki ng 5k =(
u guys can compute by yourselves if shipment isthrough express mail or air carriers:
for customs duty: cost + shipping ------------------- dutiable value in $US x rate of exchange ------------------- dutiable value(dv) in PHP x tariff rate ------------------- customs duty
for vat: dutiable value +bank charge +customs duty +brokerage fee +documentary stamp (265 pesos) +import processing fee (ipf) +excise tax ------------------------ total landed cost x vat rate (12%) ------------------------ vat due
summary: customs duty +vat +import processing fee +excise tax ------------------------ total due on customs
Note: - bank charges is for importation under letter of credit only. -there are certain items subject to excise tax like alcohol products, tobacco, jewelry etc. - brokerage fee: dv in php---------------brokerage fee under 10k---------------1,300 10k-20k-----------------2,000 20k-30k-----------------2,700 30k-40k-----------------3,300 40k-50k-----------------3,600 50k-60k-----------------4,000 60k-100k----------------4,700 100k-200k---------------5,300 if the dv is over 200,000: (dv - 200,000)x 1/8 of 1% or 0.00125 + 5,300 = brokerage fee
- for ipf: dutiable value in php----------ipf less than 250k-----------------250 pesos 250k-500k----------------------500 pesos 500k-750k----------------------750 pesos over 750k----------------------1000 pesos
In the event I go again to the post office to claim a package, if the the package is valued below $50 (the shipping is already included), a I exempted from paying any tax?
What if I received four packages(all four are valued at $15 each with the shipping already included) in different parts of the world and they all arrived in the same day, am I going to pay for the tax of all of its total cost?
Claiming them individually would be a better choice and the most lawful way right? Since they are four different packages and valued less than $50 each, thus exempted from tax.

217.50 x 42 = 9135 15.95 x 42 = 669.90 total 9804.90
PHP 9804.9 980.49 + 250 --> Import Processing Fee (IPF) 250 --> Custom Documentation Stamp 15 --> BIR Stamp ------------- 1495.49 x 10% again = 149.59
Summary Custom Duty - 980.49 Value Added Tax - 149.59 Import Proc Fee - 250 Custom Doc Stamp - 250 BIR Stamp - 15 --------------------------- PHP 1645 --> is this correct for what i shuld expect to pay?
hi katsky! this is kinda out of topic. just want to ask from what school are you and what you think is a good school for customs admin!! is there a short course for it?? thanks a lot in advance!!
Hello Katsky! Thanks for starting this most helpful thread. Will there be costums charge for an item from the U.S. won from ebay if it only costs 68 dollars? I bought several items from overseas ebay before already but I really still cant predict or estimate costums fee/charge. This time I would like to be at least emotionally and walletwise prepared Please help. Thank you.
How does one distinguish the classification of the item he/she is about to purchase and which tariff code applies?
i.e. tariff code: 8471.60.60 if flat panel 8471.60.21 if ordinary monitor or tariff code is:8519.99.90
Would it be possible to furnish us with a list for this so that we could classify which tax percentage if any applies to the item we are considering to purchase and import?
Thank you so much for starting this thread and sharing your knowledge with us. You are truly an invaluable member of this wonderful community.
Hi Katsky, Hope you can help me. I went to singapore to have my film camera repaired. No parts there so the repair shop sent it to their hongkong shop. Now the hongkong shop will send to Manila via DHL. What do i need to do or so that i wont pay tax.
i ordered around 41 pcs of assorted body shop makeups and as per the seller from the US, it was shipped around jan 8. havent received anything yet but i just got a notice to claim a parcel at the manila central post office in lawton. i called them and was told that it's going to be opened w/ a customs officer and me present. the item is: 350011108515 The Body Shop Huge Lot of Makeup $217.50
Shipping & Handling via USPS First Class Mail International (includes any seller handling fees): $15.95 USD Shipping
the notice didn't say if this is the package i have to claim but i'm just afraid because i don't know what to do when i go there tomorrow. if they ask me the value of the merchandise, should i tell them the amt i paid for it? i just emailed the seller to try o find out how it was declared, if it was declared as a gift.
can anyone please help me??? i'm willing to pay for up to P1500 because that's the amount i came up with when i computed it as suggested by another contributor. but i dont want to pay an unrealistic amount tom. how do i handle the customs officer? it's only makeup so i'm hoping that they will go easy on me.
your urgent response and advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks...
guys, the current head of customs in philpost in NAIA (for EMS packages) is a very good friend of mine. katsky_ph888, you may know mr. dizon? i recently bought 2 units o itouch. didnt pay for any duties or taxes. may 32 pesos lang na binayaran for something. before that i bought 2 units of iphone and same EMS via USPS delivery. di rin ako nagbayad ng customs niya. this is not to brag or anything, but if anyone would want to purchase anything na sobrang laki ng value at sobrang matataga sa customs (matatandang babae examiner sa philpost sa NAIA so ang strict tlga, as i have observed) eh you can email me baka makatulong ako. i am familiar with the computation since some items i bought like bags eh pinapadaan ko na tlga sa customs. pero pag gadgets, lalo na kung more that 2 units ako, i look for ways to by pass duties and taxes. masyadong mahal eh. hehe. oh d2 na lang ito ha. thanks.
@aisa*, pag binigyan ka ng malaking amount as duties, artehan mo, like you were very shocked. tell them this is your first time and this is a gift sent to you. and also, do not put all your money in your wallet. yun halagang 1500 or 2k lang lagay mo sa wallet mo. para kung bigay todo arte ka tlga, if u show your wallet to them eh 1500 makikita. hehe. this is what i did when i claimed my 1st item sa customs. hope this works. pero u have to be careful also, kasi pag sobrang inosente naman dating me, they will take advantage on it. it true. it happens.
I had a mistake before... I bought thru amazon.com a couple of books and got taxed by dhl. they included the shipping fee in the cost. the cost of the books are posted on the outside of the dhl box used by amazon.
in short, if i bought the books over here (which became available eventually) i would have saved a lot of money.
I was also taxed by DHL for a book I purchased, and it amounted to more than what I would have paid for it here. But, I was surprised with this because it was not the first time I had a book delivered by DHL. My two other purchases weren't taxed. Other books I've bought and delivered through the local post office weren't either.
I've been going over the thread, and there was one that mentioned an amount worth US$100. I had a purchase like this several years ago and I wasn't taxed.
My question is, are there items that don't get taxed? Under what conditions? Is there a specific amount that gets taxed?
Anyone can enlighten me on this, your help is very much appreciated.
Naiinis ako sa customs tax, if this is really implied bakit po ito natatawaran? I know of some people who have claimed sa post office and were being asked for 1,000, or so, if you tell the person there na 200 lang pera mo, pwede na. Unfair naman yun sa mga obligated magbayad. Kaya ako from US, I send all to my mom in Nevada then she ships them to be door to door, tax free!
My nagpabuy sa akin ng hair iron worth $100 it was sent via registered mail and sent to Cavite, worth $100 but marked as gift, she was only charged 35 pesos. Ako naman my mom sent my daughter 6 outfits nilagay nya $100 worth and as a gift I was taxed 3,600 by fedex, walang tawaran.
sorry ppl been busy with school. i had to finish my research and case defense for another subject.
so many post to answer >.<
@thecookiemonster444 i study at asian institute of maritime studies in pasay city. may pagka-mukhang pera yung eskwelahan but has a nice faculty kc mostly brokers. there are only 2 schools that battles in board exam usually - aims and lyceum batangas. there is no short course since u need to have a degree in customs admin before u can take the board exam. although, my school now is getting hi-tech. there are some minor subjects where lessons are through online or take exams on-screen.
@cinemacall we use a book. tariff and customs code of the philippines volume 1. you can buy that book at the tariff commission in philippine heart center (i think 5th floor). still 550 pesos i think. classifying is not that easy especially if u have no formal training, although you may learn through time and lots and lots of practice. they are just categorized through their description and sometimes its too general and vague. i have to buy 5 volumes of explanatory notes so it can aid me for the future.
@greyhavens2006
there are some items that are not subject to tax. they are called conditionally-free imported goods under section 105 of TCCP volume 1. to be free, there must be certain conditions met or special permit needed and only a certain items are included like books, urns containing human remains, samples with no commercial value etc. although only a handful of items (less than 30), very long yung mga conditions d kaya copy paste d2.
@globalwatchexchange why were u taxed? books are duty-free and vat-free. all books are considered educational that is why it is not taxed. bobo nmn nung ng handle ng package mo.
@marief2nurse ganun po tlga sistema thats why customs is ranked as one of the most corrupt agencies. bka yung official either naawa or garapal sinabi lng mataas ang babayaran kya pumayag makipag tawaran. if u know the system, u can find ways to abuse it but if u don't the system is gonna abuse you. ganun lang po, survival of the fittest. if u live in us, send ur package in a balikbayan box then send it door-to-door through a consignor - marami nmn filipino consignor dyan. medyo matagal dadating yung package mo kc kailangan punuin ng consignor yung container nya pra makatipid sa freight. pero tax free yun kc d pinapatawan ng tax ang balikbayan box. when we went to US for the holidays before and before we go back here we sent all our clothes in 2 balikbayan boxes plus ibang items na pinamili nmn na mabigat dalhin then yung laman ng luggage nmn puros bago for pasalubong and pangbenta. after 1 month bago dumating yung balikbayan boxes kaso solved din kmi kc yung mga items na nandun d nmn urgently needed.
OOhhh I love this thread kaso naguguluhan na talaga ako re taxes. Katsky_ph888 thanks for opening this ha. I have a few questions sana.
1. If I have an item shiped thru EMS via USPS or registered airmail, will the package be delivered to the local post office nearest my home address?
2. If I ask the seller to declare the item as a gift, will I just be charged 35php?
I want to buy an alexandrite ring kasi and a jade bangle. Gusto ko sana with appraisal kaso natatakot ako kasi of course the appraisal would be worth more than what I paid for the item plus shipping (i.e. ring would be worth $5.00 and shipping is $19.95 but appraisal would be $1,000). Ang experience ko lang kasi is with bookmooch so declared na gifts ung books kaya 35php lang binabayaran ko when I received them. thank you so much.
For EMS shipments: If you reside within Metro Manila, you'll pick it up from EMS' main office in Pasay City. They only deliver the item to your house if its of low value or a small package... still, this rarely happens.
For USPS Priority Mail and First Class Mail: If the item/package has already arrived in the Philippines, it will go straight to your local PO. They will then send you a notice card via snail mail and you'll pick it up from there.
Declare the item/package as a gift doesn't work anymore, you'd still be charged the appropriate tax.
